Once the scourge of Europe in earlier eras, by the time of the Crimean War, the cavalry arm was considered the worst element of the Ottoman army. These colourful and distinctive troops in their bright red fez headwear were mainly used in strategic support roles in secondary theatres like the Caucusus Front. While not always in decisive heavy cavalry charges like their European counterparts, they were crucial for reconnaissance, picket duty, and disrupting Russian movements.
